Purdue Picks Up 3-1 Victory Over Northeastern

Boston, Mass. - The Purdue volleyball team picked up a 16-14, 10-15, 15-5, 17-15 win over Northeastern Friday in the New England Challenge. The Boilermakers improve to 5-1 on the season, while Northeastern falls to 0-4.

"Today's match reinforced what we saw against Valparaiso," Purdue head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "Everything is in our control. We just have to learn how to execute well consistently."

Purdue edged Northeastern for a 16-14 win in Game 1. Senior Julie Doud led Purdue with five kills and eight digs.

The Huskies started Game 2 with a 6-0 advantage over the Boilermakers. Purdue went on a 7-4 run to get within three. Northeastern scored three unanswered points, bringing the score to 14-7. But Purdue was ready to bow. Kills from juniors Lori Knicker and Jennie Williams and an out-of-bounds error by the Huskies brought the Boilermakers within four. Purdue could not hold on though, as Northeastern got in one more kill to take the game, 15-10.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start Game 3. Purdue jumped out further to take a 6-3 lead. Northeastern got in two kills before Purdue went on a scoring tangent. Three kills from freshman Joanna Lowry, a block solo and kill from Risher, two block solos from Williams and a kill from Yoskey gave Purdue the 15-5 win.

Purdue success continued as they went on to pick up a tough 17-15 win in Game 5.

The Boilermakers will face Boston College in the second match of the day in the Power Gym at BCU tonight at 7 p.m. (EST).
