WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Purdue volleyball team suffered its third lost of the weekend Saturday evening when they fell 3-1 (10-15, 15-3, 15-11, 15-5) to George Washington. The Boilermakers fall to 8-4, while George Washington improved to 8-2 on the season.
"Tonight we saw a lot of things we need to improve on for next week," Purdue head coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "We'll go back to the drawing board this week and raise our momentum for conference action."
The Boilermakers were held to a clip of .192 (67-28-203). Senior Julie Doud led both teams in kills with 20. Doud and classmate Melissa Risher each pitched in 15 digs to lead the Boilermakers. Purdue outblocked George Washington 11 to 8 and sophomore Tiffany Yoskey paced the Boilers with six. Senior Tracee Brown led the Colonials with 18 kills.
Purdue started Game 1 on a 5-2 run. A kill from Jennie Williams, an ace from Melissa Risher and an out-of-bounds error from George Washington increased the Boilermaker lead to 8-2. The Old Gold and Black continued to press towards the win by going on a 4-3 run making the score 12-5. The Colonials scored the next three unanswered, but the Boilermakers were not daunted. Purdue got three more kills to take the game 15-10.
George Washington was unphased by the loss and stopped the Boilermakers 15-3 in Game 2. Purdue started the third match of the game by scoring five unanswered points. George Washington went on a 6-1 run to knot the score 6-all. The Colonials made good on a Purdue error and recorded four kills to extend their lead to 12-7. Purdue mustered four kills but the effort wasn't enought to stop George Washington as it took Game 3 15-11.
The Boilermakers were held to only five points in Game 4 as George Washington took the game 15-5.
Big Ten conference action opens next week and Purdue will meet No. 9 Minnesota in Minneapolis.
