Coming on the heels of a game in which Purdue pounded out 27 runs on 25 hits, the offensive production of the ball club seemed to be reaching expectations. Coming into a game against a team with a 5.52 ERA, and taking cuts in a ball park which measured 310-feet down both lines, the offense was in a position to have yet another breakout game. However, it was once again the Boilermakers' pitching staff that earned them the win. Morgan lowered the Boilermakers' conference-low ERA to 3.55. The senior-hurler threw nine innings, giving up three runs and struck out three. Xavier struggled with their mid-week pitching staff, throwing four different pitchers at the Boilers and walking eight batters, including walking home a Boilermaker-insurance run in the eighth inning.
With Morgan holding the Musketeers' offense at bay, Purdue was able to produce enough offense to put runs on the board. The Old Gold and Black was held to only two hits through the first four innings, but started to come alive in the fifth. Kris Luce led off by getting hit by a pitch and reached second on a wild pitch. Brad Kriner followed with a single to move Luce to third, who would later score on an errant pick off attempt by the Xavier-pitcher. Kriner would come around to score on a Mike Duursma single which put the Boilers ahead to stay. After loading the bases in the eighth inning, pinch hitter John Badylak drew a 3-1 walk to drive in the final run of the game.
With their 30th win of the season, Purdue moves to 30-14 overall and 17-7 in non-conference play. Purdue has been unbeatable in mid-week play, bettering its record to 8-0 on Wednesday. Purdue is currently ranked 42nd in the ESPN Baseball Weekly/Coaches Poll and 40th in the most recent RPI ratings.
