WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team fell to Ohio State 4-3 Sunday on the Varsity Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Boilermakers fell to 11-8 (6-3 Big Ten), much to the dismay of Purdue head coach Tim Madden.
"This was a tough two days for us, and we just got away yesterday's match," Madden said. "Ohio State took it to us, and the hard part to accept is we were just out-competed."
The Boilers were out-played most in doubles competition. Purdue, who usually pose a tough act to follow in duo action, were only able to capture a victory at the No. 2 doubles spot with Carl McCafferty and Derek Miller. In singles action, Jason Marshall defeated Andrew Carlson 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position, while McCafferty handed Vincent Ng a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss at No. 4. Scott Mayer came up with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Derek DeFalco at the No. 5, but it was enough for Purdue to take the win.
"This was such a big match for us, and with a win we would have been guaranteed third with a possible change at second headed into the conference tournament," Madden said. "It's hard to accept when we control our own destiny and could end up at number five. The only thing that could change that for us is an upset over Minnesota. The irony is that in our season, it has been done before."
