Boilers Fall To University of Southern California

March 16, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 59 Purdue men's tennis team was unable to stop the five match-winning streak of the No. 19 University of Southern California Trojans. USC defeated the Boilers 6-1.

"We played very well, and I think we got their attention," Purdue head coach Tim Madden said. "They are always a top-ranked team, and this year was no exception. We competed very hard and pushed them in every match."
Carl McCafferty and Derek Miller, both California natives, got the only doubles win for Purdue over Ryan Moore and Andrew Park. Laith Al-Agba and Scott Mayer lost a heartbreaker to Parker Collins and Patrick Gottesleben, resulting in the loss of the doubles point.
"We dictated most of the doubles play, and fought to the end at No. 3," Madden said. "That will stand for a lot when we play Pepperdine on Friday, since we'll be playing with a new format. The team who sweeps doubles will get two, instead of one point."

Jason Marshall was able to pick up the only singles win for the Boilers at No. 1. He knocked off Gottesleben 5-7, 6-3. McCafferty showed an outstanding effort, bowing out in the tiebreaker.

"USC is a very talented team throughout their lineups," Madden said. "We played tough with them. Every one of our guys fought hard. When the match was over, other than the score, it was hard to tell who actually won or lost. We give our guys a lot of credit."
