Boilers Swept by Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team lost a doubleheader to Indiana on Saturday in Bloomington. The Boilers (11-18 overall, 1-6 Big Ten) lost the opener 4-3 and the nightcap 13-8.

In the first game, Indiana (25-6, 4-3) scored a run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie. Designated hitter Dan Haegele singled to start the inning and advanced to second on right fielder Doug DeVore's walk. After a sacrifice bunt by catcher Brandt Childs, third baseman Frank O'Connell was intentionally walked to load the bases. First baseman Mark Minor took the first offering from Purdue starter Austin Bilke in the head, forcing home Haegele with the game-winning run.

Purdue scored one run in the second inning and two in the third and held a lead until the sixth. Sophomore outfielder Mike Rose led the Boilers with two hits in the game.

Bilke (0-4) went the distance, five hits while striking out four.

In the nightcap, Indiana scored seven runs in the first two innings and pounded out 14 hits in the game. After the Boilers drew within two runs at 7-5, Indiana scored four more times in the bottom of the fifth to seal the victory for the Hoosiers.

The Boilers had eight hits in the game, including two apiece from junior Chris Walker and Rose. Purdue committed five errors in the game.

The two teams will play the fourth and final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bloomington.
