Boilers Lose Third Straight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team fell to 11-14 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten with a 9-2 loss to No. 30 Minnesota (19-7 overall, 3-1 Big Ten) on Sunday at Lambert Field. The Boilers lost the four-game series 3-1.

The game started off as a pitching dual, with neither starting pitcher allowing a hit through the first three innings. Minnesota broke through in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs off Boilermaker left-hander David Gassner (3-2).

Purdue responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Ryan Cole singled to left, scoring junior Erik Frei to bring the Boilers within two runs.

The Golden Gophers countered with a five-run sixth inning, knocking Gassner from the game and extending the lead to 8-1. Minnesota added a run in the seventh on a two-out solo home run by designated hitter Josh Holthaus.

Senior Brad Brown drove in Purdue's only other run on an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore David Blomberg.

Minnesota right-hander Chadd Clarey picked up his second win of the season, allowing only one run and five hits in six innings of work. Lefty Frank Wagner earned his second save of the season with three innings of relief.

The Boilers travel to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State at 3 p.m. on April 7. Purdue returns to conference action with a four-game series against Indiana on April 9-11 in Bloomington.
