Big First Inning Busts Boilers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Purdue baseball team fell to 1-5 with a 16-4 loss at Louisville on Sunday. The Boilers allowed more than 10 runs for the fifth time this season.

Louisville (11-2) jumped on top early, tagging Boilermaker starter Brent Tinkle (0-1) for six runs in the first inning. The Cardinals followed with four runs in the third, three in the fourth and three more in the eighth to put away Purdue. Five Boiler pitchers took the mound in the game, surrendering 18 hits and five walks, while the defense committed three errors.

Offensively, Purdue collected seven hits, including a double and two triples. Junior Chris Walker raised his season batting average to .500 with a single, a double, a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior catcher Erik Frei went 2-for-3 with a triple for Purdue.

The Boilermakers travel to Boca Raton, Fla., for nine games in eight days on March 13-20.
