WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Purdue baseball team extended it's winning streak to four games on Saturday by defeating Northern Illinois in both games of a doubleheader. The Boilermakers won the first game by a score of 2-0 and took the second game 10-5. With the two wins the Boilers improve their record to 9-10. Northern Illinois drops to 2-12.
In game one at Lambert Field, the Boilers only recorded four hits and two runs but that was more then enough. Junior Russ Morgan pitched a seven-inning gem, giving up only two hits and holding the Huskies scoreless. Morgan's 2-0 shutout victory is his first win of the season.
With the Boilers up 1-0 in game one, senior Ryan Cole led things off the fifth inning with a double. Then with two outs, senior Brad Brown singled, bringing in Cole to make the count 2-0. Morgan did the rest with solid pitching down the stretch to hold on to the victory.
In the second game, Purdue got things going early as leadoff batter Chris Walker was hit by a pitch and sophomore Nate Sickler tripled bringing Walker home. Junior Daryl Hallada would then hit one of his four singles on the day to make the game 2-0 in favor of Purdue.
The fifth inning was a big one for the Boilers as they collected six runs and batted all the way through the order. In the inning, two Boilers were hit by pitches and three others walked. With two men aboard, sophomore Mike Rose connected on a homerun to deep left center field and after five innings they would lead 10-2.
Sophomore David Gassner collected the win for the Boilers going six innings and giving up three earned runs. He improved his season record to 3-1 on the season. Hallada improved his batting average to .449 by going 4-8 on the day. Walker stole two bases to give him a team high nine on the season.
Purdue will close out the three-game series with the Huskies on Sunday, March 28, at Lambert field at 1:00 The Boilers are a perfect 3-0 at home so far this season.
