BOCA RATON, Fla. - Princeton scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Purdue baseball team 3-2 on Tuesday in Boca Raton, Fla.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth, the Boilers scored two runs to take a one run lead. Senior Ryan Cole led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a base hit by sophomore David Blomberg. Cole scored on a passed ball, with Blomberg moving to third. After a ground out, senior Ryan Bettencourt bunted Blomberg home to give the Boilers the lead.
Princeton answered in the bottom of the inning. Right fielder Max Krance reached second on a two-base error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Chris Loving to tie the game at 2-2. Second baseman Jay Mitchell reached on a walk following a ground out and moved into scoring position on a Purdue error. Center fielder Jason Koonin singled to left, scoring Mitchell to give the Tigers the victory.
Sophomore right-hander Laramie Sandquist picked up the loss for the Boilers, despite pitching a great game. He allowed only one earned run and three hits in 8.2 innings, while striking out six.
Purdue (2-9) will play Rutgers at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Boca Raton, Fla.
