WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's cross country team finished atop three Big Ten squads in a five-team meet today at the Ackerman Hills Golf Course.

Senior Donnie Fellows finished second, just four seconds behind the individual winner.

Arizona won the 8,000-meter race with a score of 19, which included first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places. Purdue had a score of 69.

In addition to Fellows second-place finish at 25:27.80, Boilermakers finished 10th, 12th, 21st and 24th.

Coach Mike Poehlein said the meet was positive for his Boilermakers: "We beat two Big Ten teams, and we saw some of what we need to work on for the races we have coming up.

"I was very happy with the way we handled things."

Poehlein praised the performance of freshman Kyle Orender, who in just his second collegiate competition placed 21st.

Finishing behind Arizona and Purdue were Iowa (72), Illinois (93) and DePaul (109).

The men next run at the Indiana Intercollegiates at Bloomington on Friday, Sept. 15.
