WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Seniors Gyongyver Lakos of the women's swim team and Jason Marshall of the men's tennis team have been named the Purdue Athletes of the Month for January. The award is presented by WLFI-TV, Twin-City-Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth and the Gimlet Leadership Honorary.
During the month of January, Lakos remained undefeated in the 100 and 200 freestyle events for three weeks, beginning the season with a 7-0 record. In a meet against conference rival Indiana, Lakos sat Lambert Pool records with times of 51.02 in the 100 and 1:50.20 in the 200. Lakos, a 2000 Olympian for her home country of Hungary, leads Purdue with top times in the 200 freestyle (1:48.07).
Marshall captured the 2001 Big Ten Singles Championship to become Purdue's first men's tennis player to win the championship twice in his career. En route to the title, Marshall picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ohio State's Phil Metz in the quarterfinal round of tournament action. The win allowed him to meet Penn State's Jamie Gresh. Marshall won 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3. In the finals, Marshall, a No. 2 seed in the tournament, defeated the No. 1 seed Harsh Mankad (Minnesota) 6-1, 6-3. Marshall is currently ranked No. 29 in the nation and holds a 14-4 singles record on the year.
