WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Amukela Gwebu and Janelle Johnson of the Purdue men's and women's outdoor track and field teams have been chosen to participate in the fourth annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference at Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
Gwebu and Johnson are both jumpers on their respective teams. A native of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Gwebu is a junior. Johnson, a sophomore from Champaign, Ill., posts a leap of 37'3.25" in the triple jump for Purdue.
The two will be among 353 of the country's finest student-athletes. They were selected from a total of 885 nominations from NCAA member institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The conference will be held May 28 through June 1.
The 2000 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommended by members of the Divisions I, II and III NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees who serve as an Association-wide voice for student-athlete issues.
Over 1,000 student-athletes have taken part in the NCAA Foundation Leadership experience. The student-athletes chosen to participate will represent all NCAA divisions, 22 different sports and more than 20 countries.
