June 23, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke today announced the appointment of Ed Howat to assistant athletic director for student services. Howat, currently a compliance coordinator in the Purdue athletic department, will assume his new responsibilities Aug. 1.

"We are very pleased to have Ed fill this position, knowing he will continue to move Purdue in the right direction," Burke said. "With his strong education and tremendous hands-on background in compliance and academic services at the NCAA Division I level, we feel Ed has truly prepared himself for this position. To top it off, he's a Boilermaker, so we know we're in good hands."

"We are fortunate to have a talent such as Ed within our department," said Roger Blalock, associate athletic director for compliance and academics. "I am pleased to see him have this opportunity to contribute to the continued growth of Purdue athletics."

"This is an exciting opportunity for me," Howat says. "I am grateful to Mr. Burke for providing me this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to building upon the compliance program that Mr. Blalock has established here, as well as helping our student-athletes excel academically at Purdue University."

Howat received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Purdue in 1988. He earned a master's in education from East Tennessee State in 1990. Most recently, Howat acquired a doctorate in education from ETSU in 1999.

A basketball student-manager on three of Gene Keady's Big Ten champion teams (1984, '87 and '88), Howat's first job post-graduation was as an assistant coach for the ETSU men's basketball team from 1988-92. In 1992, Howat became an assistant for the women's basketball team at ETSU. Two years later, he took a position as an assistant academic counselor, and each year thereafter gained promotions to academic counselor, assistant to the director of athletics/compliance director and assistant director of athletics for compliance and academic services.

Howat, who is now in his third year at Purdue, will be responsible for the student services functions within the athletic department. His administrative responsibilities for student services will be to assist the athletic department in enhancing its support services to student-athletes, to provide oversight to the academic support services program and to ensure compliance with NCAA and Big Ten initial and continuing eligibility requirements.
