WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Shawn Guice (Lima, Ohio, Lima High School) and Amy Spellmeyer (Powell, Wyom., Powell High School) have been named the Purdue's Athletes-of-the-Month for their outstanding performances throughout January. The award is sponsored by WLFI-TV and Twin City Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth.

Guice, a freshman on the men's indoor track team, opened his collegiate career with the Purdue Open in Lambert Fieldhouse. In his first collegiate meet, Guice won the high jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 7-02.50. The following week, Guice traveled to the Stan Lyons Open in Indianapolis, Ind., with high expectations. The first-year Boilermaker jumped 7-03.75 to mark his second-consecutive NCAA provisional qualifying jump. Guice's mark broke the Purdue record of 7-03.50, set by David Glassburn in 1988. His personal record jump places him third in the country to date, and the top provisional qualifier.

Spellmeyer, a sophomore on the women's indoor track team, broke Kierstin Doyle's Feb. 2, 1999 record of 11-10.0/3.61m pole vault jump to become Purdue's all-time leader in the indoor event. Spellmeyer's 12-9.5/3.90m record, the highest jump in the Big Ten ever, was set on Jan. 28 versus Indiana State in Lambert Fieldhouse. Spellmeyer's mark is currently the third highest in the country, and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA indoor championship.
