Guice and Douglas Named Athletes of the Month for March Trackster and hoopster receive honor for tremendous accomplishments

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore Shaun Guice of the track and field team and senior Katie Douglas of the basketball team have been named the Purdue Athletes of the Month for March. The award is presented by WLFI-TV, Twin City Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth and Gimlet Leadership Honorary.

Guice turned in several stellar high jump performances during the month of March. At the USA Indoor Championships in Atlanta on March 3, Guice jumped 7-3.75 for a third place finish behind a 2000 Olympic team jumper. He also ran on the 4x400m relay team that ran a season best time of 3:11.10 for a third place finish. At the NCAA Indoor Championships, Guice earned his third All-America title. He was runner up with a mark of 7-5.00 for a new lifetime best and school record. Guice's mark also ranks in the top five in the country and top 10 in the world. He is the youngest jumper on either list.

Douglas led the Boilermakers to their third appearance in the Women's NCAA Final Four. The native of Indianapolis, Ind., averaged 19.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game leading Purdue to a Big Ten Tournament runner-up finish. During the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, Douglas accumulated 35 points, with 21 over LSU. She turned in a team-high 18 against No. 13 Texas Tech. Against No. 12 Xavier in the regional final, she recorded a game-high eight assists. She closed the month with 25 points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists against No. 15 Southwest Missouri State. On the first day of April in the national championship game against No. 2 Notre Dame, Douglas scored team-high 18 points with seven rebounds and five assists.
