WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Big Ten Conference announced the 2001 spring academic all-conference teams today. A total of 823 athletes were recognized for their work in the classroom, including 48 from Purdue's baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's golf teams. Purdue also led the Big Ten with five athletes carrying a perfect 4.0 career grade-point average.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, an athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year at the institution and carry a career GPA of 3.0 or better.
The five Boilermakers receiving special recognition from the Big Ten for their 4.0 GPA were baseball players Michael Correll and Heath Uppencamp, men's tennis player Dan Swan and women's golfers Christy Rittenhouse and Heather Zielinski.
Overall, the Big Ten recognized 1,741 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2000-01 academic year.
