WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former promotions manager Kendra Bracken has been chosen as one of five winners of the inaugural John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards, sponsored by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Bracken will receive a $10,000 grant to be used toward postgraduate studies.
The award recognizes minority seniors with at least a 3.0 grade-point average who intend to pursue a postgraduate degree in athletics administration. The award also honors those who have demonstrated leadership qualities on an institutional or community level.
Bracken, who is a native of Round Rock, Texas, is a Purdue alumna with a bachelor of arts degree in public relations. She has served as a promotions manager in charge of track and field at Purdue for two years. In addition, she served as the editor of the Purdue Black Cultural Center's monthly newsletter, as an intern with the Indiana Pacers and the Indiana Black Expo and was active in Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Purdue. Bracken has earned semester honors four times and is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the communication honor society.
"Purdue athletics has been lucky to have Kendra share herself with the department," said Purdue assistant promotions director Sara Fetzer. "She is a leader in every way imaginable, is active within her major, the Black Cultural Center, her sorority and her multiple internships. She is dedicated to everything she does, and Kendra deserves every good thing that comes her way."
Bracken will begin a position as a junior account executive at Fleishman-Hillard Global Communications in New York City. She previously interned with Fleishman-Hillard and primarily worked on the Reebok and Allen Iverson accounts. Bracken will begin classes for work on her masters in communication with a concentration in sports marketing in January.
