WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Fifty-eight Boilermakers were named to the spring Academic All-Big Ten team, it was announced yesterday. The honor is awarded to letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution who carry a grade-point average of 3.00 or better.
Highlighting the list of Boilermaker honorees was senior Stacy Orschell. An advertising major who was named the 2000 Big Ten Women's Golf Athlete of the Year, Orschell capped her collegiate career by leading Purdue to its first ever conference title and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Six of Orschell's teammates were similarly honored: senior Lisa Kenley (general management), junior Katie Kinsinger (biology education), sophomore Andrea Makauskas (movement and sports science), sophomore Andrea Quandt (athletic training), sophomore Christy Rittenhouse (communications), and senior Kelly Beth Simmons (small business).
Thirteen members of Purdue's men's track and field team received Academic All-Big Ten accolades. They were: junior Tom Aliff (math), sophomore Paul Bishop (law and society), junior Chris Boesch (computer technology), junior Tito Downer (chemical engineering), junior Donnie Fellows (computer science), sophomore Ryan Fitzpatrick (engineering), sophomore Amukela Gwebu (pre-management), senior Mike Hall (elementary education), senior Eric Harper (building construction), junior Matt Hartman (mechanical engineering), senior Andrew Keffaber (biology education), junior Scott Koschka (computer technology), and senior Chris Spurrier (electrical engineering).
Ten of their counterparts on the women's track and field team were named Academic All-Big Ten: senior Darria Clayton (organizational leadership), junior Angela Craft (management), senior Angela Draper (law and society), sophomore Janelle Johnson (engineering), sophomore Krissy Liphardt (law and society), senior Carri Long (secondary education), junior Katie Meyer (3.30 management), sophomore Katie Rorem (communications), junior Ann Stechschulte (movement and sport science), and Barbara Wenger (engineering).
Purdue's baseball team, which finished third in the Big Ten, also placed 10 student-athletes on the academic all-conference squad. They were: sophomore John Badylak (health science), senior Jeremy Ballard (general management), junior David Blomberg (political science), senior Brandon Buck (social studies), sophomore Michael Correll (political science), senior Daryl Hallada (organizational leadership), junior Ben Quick (pre-management), junior Nate Sickler (industrial technology), sophomore Heath Uppencamp (economics), and senior Chris Walker (organizational leadership).
Six Purdue softball players earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition. They were: sophomore Nicole Crouse (law and society), senior Crystal Inman (management), senior Danica Maher (communications), sophomore Danika Nice (pre-physical therapy), senior Shahara Nixon (civil engineering), and junior Lynne Tortorelli (pre-medicine).
Five members of the Boilermaker women's tennis team earned academic all-conference honors. They were: senior Jennifer Embry (movement and sports science), sophomore Lynsey Fick (communications), junior Erika Quebe (pre-pharmacy), senior Shannon Taheny (general management), junior Lisa Walgenbach (biology).
Four Purdue men's tennis players, including sophomore Laith Al-Agba (pre-management), senior Tushaar Gautam (pre-management), senior Evan Hays (industrial management) and junior Dan Swan (pre-management), were named Academic All-Big Ten.
Senior Colby Huffman (3.33 movement and sports science), junior Chad Jones (3.00 organizational leadership) and Ryan Miller (3.20 general management) were men's golf representatives on the academic all-conference team.
Purdue, which had 24 Academic All-Big Ten honorees in the winter and 30 in the fall, had a total of 112 student-athletes earn that distinction during the 1999-2000 school year.
