Embry and Fleming Named October Athletes-of-the-Month

Embry and Fleming Named October Athletes-of-the-Month Honorees cited for outstanding performances in tennis and cross country, respectively.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Jennifer Embry (Houston, Texas, Memorial H.S.) and Geoff Fleming (Roseville, Calif., Roseville H.S.) have been named Purdue's Athletes-of-the-Month for their outstanding performances throughout October. The award is sponsored by WLFI-TV and Twin City Dodge-Chrysler-Plymouth.

Embry, a junior on the women's tennis team, defeated 63rd-ranked Amy Jensen of California 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (5) to win the Arizona State Fall Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. She won five matches in three days, four in straight sets, and knocked off top-seeded and 19th-ranked Angela Lawrence of Pepperdine in the semifinals on Oct. 10. Embry has posted a 9-3 fall singles record, while also enjoying success in doubles competition. Embry and teammate Missy Wright defeated Arizona State's 19th-ranked doubles team of Allison Nash and Celina McCoury 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3 in the Riviera All-American Championships. Embry and Wright were also doubles semifinalists in the Rice Invitational.

Fleming, a sophomore on the men's cross country team, placed 23rd with a time of 23:58 at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 2. Purdue finished seventh in the invitational, marking the school's highest finish in the event in the past 10 years. Fleming also finished 13th with a time of 24:23.91 in the Indiana Intercollegiates on Oct. 16, leading Purdue to a third-place finish. He has posted three top-10 finishes this season, including a first-place finish at the Valparaiso Invitational. Fleming looks to lead the Boilermakers to a strong finish at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Nov. 1.
