Dewey's Early Retirement Announced Compliance and academic advisor and former volleyball coach has spent 25 years with Boilermakers

June 19, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue athletic director Morgan Burke today announced the early retirement of Carol Dewey from her post as a compliance and academic advisor. Dewey's last official day will be Aug. 31.

"Having worked with Carol over the past five years, I am filled with mixed emotions on her decision," said Roger Blalock, associate athletic director for compliance and academics. "We, as a staff, are happy for Carol but saddened for our department's loss of her contributions. We were fortunate to have had a person of her caliber as part of our family and we will miss her."

Dewey has been in Purdue's Academic Services Department for the last five years, but spent 20 years as the Boilermakers' head volleyball coach. She was named the first coach in Purdue volleyball history in 1975, and coached until 1994. In her 20-year tenure, Dewey guided the Boilermakers to four Big Ten championships (1979, '80, '82 and '85) and seven NCAA Tournaments while compiling an impressive 469-256 record, good for a .647 winning percentage. She remains the all-time winningest coach of any sport in Purdue history.

Dewey's commitment to academics was revealed in her volleyball teams' classrooms success. Purdue had six Academic All-Americans, 11 Academic All-District Five picks and 32 Academic All-Big Ten selections (more than any other conference school) under Dewey's direction. Every student-athlete coached by Dewey who played for four years graduated.
