Boosters Receive Awards at John Purdue Day Purdue says thank you to faithful supporters.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Several awards were handed out to Purdue athletic department boosters and University president Steven C. Beering on June 6 at the annual John Purdue Day, whose purpose to is to say "thank you" to the Boilermakers' faithful supporters. More than 500 fans were in attendance for a full day of golf, tennis, socializing and addresses from various athletic department personnel, including athletic director Morgan Burke, football coach Joe Tiller and men's basketball coach Gene Keady.

Three individuals were named recipients of the Diamond "P" Award for distinguished service and commitment to Purdue athletics: Beering; Michael J. Birck of Hinsdale, Ill.; and James G. Rush of Lafayette.

Beering has been president of Purdue since 1983 and is an active and vocal supporter of intercollegiate athletics. He and his wife, Jane, have attended more athletic events than the last eight Purdue presidents combined. Beering is the dean of Big Ten presidents has served on numerous Big Ten Conference and NCAA advisory boards.

Birck is a 1962 graduate of Purdue with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. A native of Missoula, Mont., the Birck-Boilermaker Golf Complex is named in recognition of his generous contribution. He has served on the athletic department's Advisory Council.

Rush holds a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue and played football for the Boilermakers in 1940 and 1941. A native of Houston, he has served on the alumni association board. A total of 38 individuals have received the Diamond "P."
