Boilermakers Combine Efforts To Claim Titan Series Purdue topped Indiana 10.5 to 9.5 in the intrastate trophy battle
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Boilermakers have earned a year's worth of bragging rights over intrastate rival Indiana by claiming the 2002-03 Titan Series trophy by a score of 10.5 to 9.5.

The Titan Series, sponsored by Keebler, awards points to the victor in each of the head-to-head meetings between the schools' 18 common sports. In the event of a tie or series split, each team is awarded one-half point.

The Hoosiers claimed the Monon Spike trophy and the first half-point of the year with a five-game win over Purdue on the volleyball court. The Boilermaker women's soccer team reclaimed the lead with a 1-0 victory over Indiana at the Purdue Varsity Soccer Complex. The back-and-forth battle continued as Indiana picked up two points at the men's and women's Big Ten Cross Country Championships. The Hoosiers finished fourth on the men's side to Purdue's ninth-place finish, while the Indiana women were third to Purdue's eighth. The Boilermakers topped the Hoosiers 34-10 on the gridiron to cut the lead to half a point. Another volleyball victory gave Indiana a one-point lead entering the winter sports season.

The basketball teams split December's Dual in the Dome with the Purdue women and Indiana men posting victories to keep the deficit at one. Indiana topped the Purdue women in a swimming dual to go up two points, the largest lead to that point. A January 25 men's basketball upset and a Feb. 7 win by the wrestling team put the Boilermakers just half a point away from the Hoosiers. The men's swimmers claimed a dual meet win to extend the lead once again, but the Boilermakers won the final women's basketball contest and also took the men's indoor track point with a third-place finish at Big Ten's to tie the series at 5.5 apiece. The Hoosiers claimed the women's indoor track point with a second-place Big Ten finish to go up 6.5 to 5.5.

The men's and women's tennis teams swept the Hoosiers, 6-1 and 7-0, to give Purdue its first lead since the score was 1.0 to 0.5. The golf teams padded the Boilermaker lead, as the women took fourth to Indiana's eighth and the men edged the Hoosiers for fifth place at the Big Ten Championships. The Purdue softball team made the lead 3.5 with a 6-0 Senior Day victory in West Lafayette. Indiana won both outdoor track duals and returned the softball Senior Day favor with a 3-0 victory on the diamond in Bloomington. With just one point separating the teams, the Titan Series laid in the hands of the Boilermaker baseball team. Purdue took the first two games of the four-game series by scores of 10-3 and 20-4 to clinch the win for the Boilermakers. Indiana took the final two baseball games, but could not score enough points to overcome the Boilermakers' 10.5 to 9.0 lead.

The overall series winner receives a traveling trophy at year's end.
