Boilermakers Among Nation's Academic Elite Eight Academic All-Americans rank tied for third in Division I

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Eight Purdue student-athletes earned Academic All-America recognition during the 2000-01 school year, tying the Boilermakers for the third-most selections among NCAA Division I institutions.

Four Boilermakers were named first team: Drew Brees (football), Camille Cooper (basketball), Katie Douglas (basketball) and Dan Swan (tennis), two were named second team: David Blomberg (baseball) and Gene Mruczkowski (football), and two were named third team: Carson Cunningham (basketball) and Lynne Tortorelli (softball).

Nebraska also had eight such honorees. Notre Dame led the way with 11, followed by Penn State with nine. Emory, a Division III school, led all NCAA institutions with 12.

The Academic All-America program is overseen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and is sponsored by Verizon.
