WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Construction has begun on the $17.1 million Aquatics Center at Purdue. The project, funded entirely by gifts and expected to be completed in August of 2001, will be the home of the Purdue men's and women's swimming and diving teams, as well as educational and recreational swimming for the students at the university.

The demolition of the two swimming pools and several tennis courts at the co-rec gym is already complete and forms are now being set for the footings and foundation. The work will begin at the south end of what will be the new Aquatics Center and proceed north.

When completed, the Aquatics Center will replace the 61-year old pool in Lambert Fieldhouse and the outdoor pool at the co-rec.

In related news, Purdue has announced the hiring of aquatics director David Fraseur. Fraseur will be responsible for the overall day-to-day operations, as well as special events to be held at the new facility. He comes to Purdue from his alma mater, Truman State in Kirksville, Mo. He has served as the Truman State natatorium director for the past six years. His duties there included managing the operations budget, facility programming, staff supervision, hiring and training and facility maintenance.

Among Fraseur's many certifications are Red Cross Water Safety Instructor-Trainer, Lifeguard Instructor-Trainer, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Pool Operator. He has also taught a variety of courses including Water Safety Instruction, Analysis of Swimming, Water Aerobics and Health and Fitness.

Fraseur has arrived on campus and has begun his new role with Purdue.
