Academic All-Americans Speak At Local Schools Brees, Cunningham and Douglas help prepare students for success

Nov. 6, 2000

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Drew Brees, Carson Cunningham and Katie Douglas reached out to the community today, speaking at local schools in conjunction with the Life's Playbook series, sponsored by Verizon. The program goes hand-in-hand with Life's Playbook for Success: Secrets from the Verizon Academic All-American Hall of Famers.

Cunningham, of the men's basketball team, and Douglas, of the women's basketball team, made a short trip across from Mackey Arena to speak at West Lafayette Junior High School in a morning assembly. After a presentation by Hall of Famer, Olympian and Indiana Fever assistant coach Anne Donovan, Cunningham and Douglas fielded questions from the audience. Those questions were broad in scope, with students asking both Cunningham and Douglas about the importance of setting goals, their post-graduation plans, and their personal heroes.

Brees, a member of the Boilermaker football team, joined Hall of Famer Oliver Luck, a former NFL player and past president of NFL Europe, at West Lafayette's Harrison High School. The two spoke in an afternoon program for upperclassmen athletes.

Brees, Cunningham and Douglas, all seniors, earned Academic All-America honors from Verizon/CoSIDA during the 1999-2000 school year.
