WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Aaron Manias hit his second grand slam of the season as part of Purdue Baseball's eight-run fourth inning Tuesday as the Boilermakers scored 10 unanswered runs to post a run-rule victory vs. Ball State, 14-4, for the second year in a row at Alexander Field.

Purdue (29-19) won for the fifth time in its last six games and improved to 5-1 vs. teams from the state of Indiana as a the annual rivalry series with the Hoosiers looms this weekend in Bloomington.

Logan Sutter connected for his Big Ten-leading 21st double of the year as part of a three-hit night, tying the program's single-season record for doubles that has stood since 2001.

Brandon Anderson barreled up for a 420-foot home run over the bullpen past the right field wall in the first inning, a two-run shot that helped the Boilermakers not trail at the end of a full inning for the third game in a row. Dating back to April 27, Purdue has held the lead at the end of 42 of the 50 innings while winning five of six.

Manias' seventh home run of the season doubled as the Boilers' fifth grand slam of the campaign, but first slam since March 15. For the third year in a row, a Purdue player has hit multiple grand slams in a season. Prior to 2023, it had not happened since 2016. The Boilermakers hit a grand slam against Ball State (32-17) for the second year in a row after Connor Caskenette's seventh-inning slam last season (his second of an All-Big Ten campaign) brought the run-rule into effect.

Purdue scored at least eight runs in an inning for the sixth time this season. Nine of the Boilers' last 12 games have featured one team scoring at least six unanswered runs – with Purdue on the right side of such a surge in six of the nine games.

The game ended in run-rule walk-off fashion on Will Briggs' bases-loaded sac fly in the bottom of the seventh.

On a night when the Boilermakers drew 10 free passes (8 walks, 2 HBP) at the plate, the four Purdue pitchers that took the mound issued just one (an HBP in the fourth inning).

Joe Trenerry recorded eight outs on just 26 pitches, working 2 2/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn his first collegiate win. The freshman retired the first five batters he faced and erased a leadoff single in the sixth inning when Logan Sutter and Lukas Cook teamed up to turn a 3-6 double play. Isaac Milburn rolled up another inning-ending double play the following frame.

Purdue reeled off its big inning after Ball State tied the game at 4-4 on a three-run homer from backup catcher Max Kalk, his first of the year. It was the only extra-base hit the Boilermakers surrendered to a Ball State team with 69 home runs and a .483 team slugging percentage entering the night. Austin Klug and Justin Guiliano worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings across the second and third.

Eli Anderson and Sutter delivered two-run singles up the middle to account for the first half of the scoring in Purdue's eight-run bottom of the fourth. Manias hit the grand slam to right field in his second plate appearance of the frame after drawing a leadoff walk to ignite the rally.

Friday's series opener at Indiana is set for a 6 p.m. ET first pitch in Bloomington.
