LUBBOCK, Texas – For the second straight day, wind gusts reached up to 30 mph at the NCAA Lubbock Regional. A 20 degree drop in temperature plus sitting rain throughout the day made The Rawls Course even more difficult. Despite the tough conditions, Purdue Women's Golf battled through the second round to move up the leaderboard and only one shot off the cut line to make the NCAA Championships.
The Boilermakers shot an 8-over 296 Monday afternoon, the third-best round of the day, to move from eighth into sixth place heading into the final round. While No. 7 Wake Forest (E) and No. 6 Texas (+8) look to have their spots to nationals all but locked up, six teams are within two shots of one another for the final three spots. Purdue (+28) is just one shot behind UC Davis (+27) for fifth and two shots back of No. 18 Arizona and Iowa State, as both teams sit in a tie for third at 26-over. No. 19 Texas A&M and Tennessee are lurking one shot behind the Boilermakers at 29-over.
Momo Sugiyama led Purdue Monday with an even-par 72, her 15th round of par-or-better this season and the 45th of her Boilermaker career. The senior made three birdies, including a pair of 2-putt birdies on par 5s (No. 2 and No. 17). With her steady round, Sugiyama moved into the Top 10 of the individual leaderboard, tied for eighth (+4) after 36 holes.
Fellow senior Natasha Kiel shaved six strokes off her opening round, carding a 73 (+1) after a strong finish. Finding herself 5-over through the first seven holes, Kiel turned her day around with four straight birdies. She made back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes to grab momentum at the turn. Keeping the streak alive, Kiel made a pair of long birdies putts to start the back nine. Throwing a dart at the pin on No. 17, the Boilermaker converted her fifth birdie over a 10-hole stretch. A 2-under 34 on the back side completed her bounce back round.
Jocelyn Bruch followed her classmates by playing better in the second round. The senior fired a 75 (+3) for a five-stroke improvement. The first Boilermaker on the course, Bruch parred the first five holes before rolling in a 10-footer for birdie at the sixth. She was even at the turn and kept the big numbers out of play on the back nine.
After leading Purdue in the opening round, freshman Lauren Timpf contributed to the team score with a 76 (+4) on Monday. Despite not finding a birdie, she battled the conditions and finished strong with pars on her final seven holes. At 5-over through two rounds, Timpf is tied for 12th.
Eighteen holes are left to decide which teams advance to the NCAA Championships. For Tuesday's final round, the Boilermakers will be paired with No. 18 Arizona and UC Davis. The three teams will start on the back nine, beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
