LUBBOCK, Texas – Battling windy conditions (gust up to 35 mph) throughout the day, freshman Lauren Timpf fired a gutsy 73 (+1) to lead Purdue Women's Golf in the opening round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at The Rawls Course. As a team, the Boilermakers (+20) find themselves in eighth place, but only three shots off the Top 5 cutline that secures a spot in the NCAA Championships following 54 holes of play.
After all 12 teams played a practice round in the morning, the opening round of tournament action began Sunday afternoon, starting one day early due to expected inclement weather in Lubbock over the next few days.
Timpf was the first Boilermaker on the course and quickly got Purdue started with a birdie on the par-5 second hole. After bombing a 322-yard drive downwind, the freshman hit a smooth 7-iron to the right side of the green that led to a 2-putt birdie. That was one of a team-high four birdies for Timpf, ranking second in the field. She took advantage of the lengthy holes by making three birdies on par 5s. Playing well through the difficult conditions, Timpf is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard.
Momo Sugiyama added a 76 (+4), carding 2-over 38s on both sides of the par 72 golf course. The senior's best stretch of holes was No. 4 through 14, playing those 11 holes 2-under par and bogey free. She found birdies at the par-4 seventh and the par-4 11th, one of only three players in the field to birdie No. 11.
Natasha Kiel shot 79 (+7), while Jocelyn Bruch and Samantha Brown had 80s (+8) to round out the scores for the Old Gold and Black.
Purdue has 36 holes left to move into the Top 5 to qualify for nationals, starting with the second round on Monday. The Boilermakers will be paired with UC Davis (+19) and Florida Gulf Coast (+21), teeing off No. 1 beginning at 12:55 p.m. ET.
