WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – For the third straight season, the Purdue men's basketball team will hit the road for an exhibition game, traveling to Lexington, Kentucky, to face SEC power Kentucky in Rupp Arena.
The game will be played on Friday, Oct. 24, with time and TV designations will be announced at a later date.
The past two years, Purdue has traveled to play charity exhibition games to help areas devastated by violent tornadoes. A year ago, Purdue traveled to Creighton, falling to the 15th-ranked Jays, 93-87. Two years ago, the Boilermakers traveled to face No. 14 Arkansas, losing to the Razorbacks 81-77 in overtime.
Both squads figure to be ranked in the top 15 when the preseason polls come out in mid-October. The two teams were on same side of the bracket in the Midwest Regional a year ago and could have played each other in the Elite 8. Both teams reached the Sweet 16 played in Indianapolis.
The Boilermakers are coming off an appearance in the Sweet 16 with a 24-12 overall record and returns four starters and four other standouts, while welcoming in four talented newcomers via the recruiting class (Omer Mayer, Antione West Jr.) and transfer portal (Oscar Cluff, Liam Murphy).
Kentucky also posted a 24-12 overall record and finished tied for sixth in the SEC Conference with a 10-8 record. Of the Wildcats' 24 wins a year ago, eight of them (8-6 record) were against top-25 teams, including five against the top 10. Kentucky is ranked No. 10 in ESPN's latest rendition of the "way-too-early" top 25 polls, using the transfer portal extensively to rebuild the roster.
Kentucky leads the all-time series by a 6-2 advantage, but the teams haven't face each other since Dec. 3, 1997, an 89-75 victory in Chicago. Purdue's last win against Kentucky came on Dec. 1, 1984. Kentucky has won two straight games in the series.
