CARLSBAD, Calif. – Seniors Jocelyn Bruch and Momo Sugiyama led Purdue Women's Golf on the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Championships. The duo carded rounds of 73 (+1), tied for 46th on the individual leaderboard.
Entering the national championships as the 29th seed, the Boilermakers (+15) find themselves in 26th place after the first day. Counting scores combined to go 7-over through the last two holes, preventing Purdue from finishing the round strong.
No. 24 Vanderbilt (-6) holds a 2-shot lead over No. 25 Oklahoma State (-4), the only two teams that ended the opening round under par. The Boilermakers are ahead of No. 7 Wake Forest (+16) and Iowa State (+18), a pair of programs that beat Purdue at the NCAA Lubbock Regional.
Bruch made a team-high three birdies in the opening round, all on the back nine. Starting on No. 10, she parred the first two holes before chipping in for birdie at the par-3 12th. She added another birdie at the difficult, par-4 15th. After hitting her approach shot to six feet on No. 18, Bruch rolled in the birdie putt to make the turn in red figures. She was consistent on the front side, making eight pars; however, a double bogey at the seventh cost the senior an under-par round.
Sugiyama was bogey free through her first 10 holes, making a birdie on her own at No. 15 to card a 1-under 35 on her opening side. She made two bogeys and seven pars on the front, including a bogey at the last, to complete her round of 73.
Natasha Kiel and Samantha Brown contributed to the team score, carding rounds of 78 (+6) and 79 (+7), respectively. The pair of Boilermakers made two birdies apiece, one on each side. They both birdied the par-4 seventh before playing the final two holes 3-over par.
After playing in the morning wave during the first round, the Boilermakers will play in the afternoon for Saturday's second round. Purdue joins Baylor (+8) and Cal State Fullerton (+20) off the first tee, beginning at 4:40 p.m. ET.
