AUBURN, Ala. -- The Purdue men's golf team posted the sixth-lowest round of the day, but fell one spot to sixth place after 36 holes at the NCAA Auburn Regional Championships, hosted at the Auburn University Club.
The Boilermakers shot a 7-over par 295 for a 36-hole total of 7-over par 583 (288-295) to sit in sixth place, just three shots behind No. 25 Georgia Tech for the fifth and final advancing spot. No. 1 ranked Auburn is running away with the title at 19-under par, but the Boilermakers are still within shouting distance of second-place Texas A&M (-1), New Mexico State in third place (Even) and No. 13 UCLA in fourth place (+2).
Georgia Tech is fifth (+4), while Purdue (+7), SMU (+8) and Charleston (+12) all have a shot at the fifth and final qualifying position.
Conditions were near-perfect on Tuesday, but the course dried out and fought back in round two. After a stroke average of 73.32 in Monday's opening round, scoring worsened by almost a stroke-and-a-half in Tuesday's second round, with a 74.63 average. After seven teams posted scores of even-par or better, just three teams reached that mark on Tuesday.
The Boilermakers were in the hunt for a spot in the top five after two rounds, but played the final two holes (8 and 9) in 3-over par to fall off the pace. Purdue managed just 11 birdies in round two and was hampered by four double-bogeys after having none on day one.
Senior Nels Surtani recorded a 1-under par 71 to move into 11th place at 1-under par 143 (72-71) after 36 holes. Surtani is looking to become the first player since All-American Lee Williamson to record a pair of top-10 finishes in NCAA Regionals action, after placing T-10th a year ago in West Lafayette.
Freshman Supapon Amornchaichan also had a strong round, posting a 1-over par 73 for a 36-hole total of 1-over par 145 (72-73), placing him T-18th after two rounds. Amornchaichan was 1-under par through his first 12 holes, but suffered a pair of bogeys, including one on his final hole, to drop to over par for the round.
Kent Hsiao is tied for 29th at 3-over par 147 (73-74). Hsiao started strong, being 2-under par through seven holes, but a bogey-double bogey-bogey stretch moved him back over par midway through his round.
Sam Easterbrook (73-77=150) and Jenson Forrester (71-79=150) are tied for 46th at 6-over par 150.
Purdue will be paired with UCLA and Georgia Tech in tomorrow's final round, teeing off hole No. 10 at 9 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. CT.
