<br /><br />The Purdue men's golf team had all five players shoot between 71 and 73 in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Championships to put itself in position after 18 holes at the Auburn University Club.

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Purdue men's golf team had all five players shoot between 71 and 73 in the opening round of the NCAA Regional Championships to put itself in position after 18 holes at the Auburn University Club.
 
The Boilermakers totaled an even-par 288 to tie for fifth after 18 holes. The host school and No. 1-ranked Auburn Tigers own the 18-hole lead after shooting a 13-under par 275, leading UCLA by eight shots. Georgia Tech is third at 4-under par, while SMU is fourth at 2-under par.
 
Purdue is tied for fifth with No. 12 Texas A&M and New Mexico State at even-par entering Tuesday's second round. TCU is eighth just one shot back at 1-over par, while Little Rock is ninth at 3-over par.
 
Purdue managed just 15 birdies in round one, but ranked second in the field with 59 pars. Purdue was fourth in par-3 scoring (3.20) and was second behind Auburn in par-4 scoring (4.06).
 
Purdue, Auburn and Georgia Tech were the only schools in round one with all five players shooting 73 or lower.
 
Leading the Boilermakers was sophomore Jenson Forrester, with a 1-under par 71. Forrester was 1-over par through eight holes, but played the back nine in 2-under par for his 15th round of par or better this season – good for T-10th after 18 holes.
 
Playing in his first NCAA competition, Supapon Amornchaichan fired an even-par 72 to sit in T-20th after round one. He played both nines in even par, alternating birdies and bogeys for the majority of his round.
 
Senior Nels Surtani played a strong back nine to shoot even-par 72, also tied for T-20th after 18 holes. He played the back nine in 1-under par.
 
Sam Easterbrook and Kent Hsiao are tied for 31st at 1-over par 73. Easterbrook started fast, grabbing the early lead at 3-under par through seven holes, but played his last 11 holes in 4-over par. Hsiao also shot 1-over par, struggling on the par-5's, shooting 2-over par on the four holes. He entered the tournament averaging 4.73 on par 5's.
 
Easterbrook set the school record for birdies in a season today, now with 131.
 
Purdue will tee off round two at 8 a.m. CT / 9 a.m. ET off hole 10 and be paired with SMU and Texas A&M.
