BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Purdue pitchers issued 13 free passes (9 walks, 4 HBP) vs. 41 batters faced, with the traffic on the base paths leading to an early six-run deficit and 14-4 defeat in a rubber game at Indiana on Sunday.

The Hoosiers (29-22, 14-13 Big Ten) scored five times in the second inning and brought the run rule into effect with a six-run bottom of the seventh.

Keenan Spence hit an opposite-field, three-run homer in the fourth inning to cut IU's lead in half. Eli Anderson was 3-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 10 consecutive games, plating Spence with an RBI single in the top of the seventh. Spence opened the frame with a gapper to the fence in left center for a double.

Realistically, the Boilermakers (30-21, 10-17 Big Ten) will need to sweep Nebraska at home during the final weekend of the regular season (May 15-17) to have a chance to qualify for the 12-team Big Ten Tournament.

Purdue issued free passes to five of IU's first 10 batters of the game, including four consecutive walks in with one out in the second inning. But the big blow of the frame was Korbyn Dickerson's two-out, three-run homer that put the Hoosiers up 6-0.

In four trips through the lineup, the Boilermakers recorded just one out against the 8-9 duo at the bottom of the Indiana order. That helped set the stage for the top of the IU lineup, with the 1-2-3-4-5 hitters recording a combined 12 RBI and seven runs scored.

The final seven Hoosiers that came to the plate reached base safely, leading to the big inning that brought the game to an end in the bottom of the seventh.

Purdue' 13 free passes conceded were one shy of a season high, allowing 14 (11 walks, 3 HBP) in a nine-game vs. Michigan in the nightcap of a March 21 doubleheader. The Boilermakers were credited with only 84 strikes among their 150 pitches (56%) Sunday.

Aaron Manias joined Anderson and Spence with multiple hits. But only one other Boilermaker reached base safely via a hit, walk or hit by pitch.

Purdue closes out its midweek schedule and plays its final true road game Tuesday at Ball State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET.
