BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Purdue Baseball had a base runner in all but one inning but was kept off the scoreboard for the first time in 217 games, falling in 8-0 fashion at Indiana in Friday's series opener.
The game featured just three extra-base hits as the Hoosiers (28-21, 13-12 Big Ten) scored the majority of their runs with singles, bunts and putting the ball in play with a runner on third base.
The Boilermakers (29-20, 9-16 Big Ten) were shut out for the first time since a May 2021 series opener at Maryland. They were blanked by their rivals from Bloomington for the first time since their debut at Bart Kaufman Field in May 2014.
Isaac Milburn struck out a season-high eight over five innings of effective relief, putting four consecutive zeros on the board until IU finally organized a rally against the lefthander in the bottom of the eighth. Milburn inherited the bases loaded with one out in the third inning. He retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and struck out eight of the first 17, including the side against the heart of the lineup in the seventh inning.
The bottom half of the IU lineup carried the load offensively. The 5-9 portion of the batting order finished the night a combined 7-for-17 with five RBI and six runs scored. The Hoosiers took an early 2-0 advantage and extended their lead with three-run rallies in the third and eighth innings.
Senior Ryan Kraft gave the Hoosiers seven innings of five-hit ball in his final home appearance. Purdue had its leadoff man reach base safely in three of the first four innings but stranded runners in scoring position in all three frames. An inning-ended 6-4-3 double play squashed another potential rally in the top of the fifth.
Breck Nowik accounted for the top defensive plays of the night at second base. He used a glove flip to first base to prevent a leadoff bunt single for IU's leadoff man in the lineup to begin the fourth inning. He made a diving catch behind the second base bag to finish off a 1-2-3 inning for Milburn the following frame.
The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.
