Scrimmage Concludes Another Week of Spring Football

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football concluded another week of spring practice with a scrimmage Saturday morning inside the Mollenkopf Athletic Center.

Head coach Barry Odom was pleased with what he saw out of the Boilermakers as they inch closer to the end of spring ball.

"I love what our assistant coaches have done teaching our team," said Odom. "I love the way that our players have attacked every single day, the willingness to be coached and allow us to teach and put schematically, what our base stuff is, together."

The quarterback competition has remained the primary storyline throughout the spring. Evans Chuba, EJ Colson, Bennett Meredith and Malachi Singleton have all taken reps with the first team during practices. Colon and Singleton spoke with the media on Tuesday, and following Saturday's scrimmage, it was Chuba and Meredith who answered questions.

While the quarterback battle is a competition, it is a tight-knit room that wants the best for one another.

"We've got some really good players in that room. We feed off each other," said Meredith. "It is very competitive, everyone wants to be the guy, but we're all rooting for each other."

Meredith is the only quarterback on the roster that has played in a Purdue uniform. He appeared in three games in 2023, which included a start against Northwestern. Going through a coaching change, Meredith did not waver on if he was going to continue his career wearing the Old Gold and Black.

"I trusted Mr. (Mike) Bobinski, I knew he'd bring in a good staff," said Meredith. At the end of the day, it was just my love for Purdue. I love being a Boilermaker."

One of three transfer quarterbacks joining Purdue this spring, Chuba is excited to be back on the field and competing for the starting role, especially after missing his senior season of high school and his freshman season at Washington State due to injury.

"Somebody has to be the starting quarterback," said Chuba. "All I can do and focus on is playing my best football – from there whatever happens, happens. That's all I can control."

Legendary Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady attended practice to get a look at the Boilermakers under their new head coach. The former Kansas State quarterback was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1958 NFL Draft before becoming the winningest coach in Purdue Basketball history.

"He exemplifies what I want for our program, the hard, smart, and tough that we talk about each day," said Odom.

The Boilermakers have one more week of spring practice, ending with the Spring Showcase on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. The Spring Showcase is open to the public with free admission, and Purdue will take the field at 12 p.m. ET.
