WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Logan Sutter connected for a pair of two-run homers to help Purdue Baseball bring the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning after trailing by as many as nine, but Austin Peay took the midweek slugfest 16-10 Tuesday at Alexander Field.

Both teams scored eight unanswered runs during one stretch in the game – the Governors (31-11) racing out to an 8-0 lead and the Boilermakers (24-16) scoring eight unanswered for the second game in a row to make the score 13-10 in the eighth inning. Purdue brought the tying run to the plate as part of a six-run bottom of the eighth.

The game was two outs away from ending in run-rule fashion with a score of 13-2 at the end of the seventh when Sutter hit his second home run of the night, a 430-foot blast to center field that gave him 51 RBI on the season. He also went deep off the scoreboard in left field with Camden Gasser aboard in the fifth inning.

Three-run homers from Andres Matias and Ray Velazquez helped power the Austin Peay offense. They finished the game a combined 6-for-11 with nine RBI and four runs scored from the 7-8 spots in the lineup.

Velazquez kept the bottom of the ninth drama free after he connected for his three-run homer with two outs in the top of the frame to double the visitors' lead.

The 16-10 final score made it the second game of the year at Alexander Field to feature at least 25 runs. It was the highest-scoring contest at the ballpark since Illinois was victorious 18-10 in the 2024 regular-season finale.

Sutter posted his second multi-homer game of the season. He now has 12 home runs this year and 20 in 89 games over his two years as a Boilermaker. He's the seventh Purdue player in the BBCOR bat era (2011-present) to hit a dozen home runs in a season.

Meanwhile, by recording his 50th RBI on April 22, Sutter became the second-fastest Boilermaker to reach the benchmark (by date on the calendar) since 2001. Prior to last season, a Purdue player had not achieved the feat prior to May 10.

The Boilermakers sent 11 men to the plate in their six-run eighth inning, the team's second-most prolific inning at home this season. The first five Purdue batters reached base safely. Brandon Anderson delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded. The clutch two-out hits came from Aaron Manias (two-run double) and Ty Gill (two-run single). Sergio DeCello was hit by a pitch twice in the frame.

Austin Peay used three pitchers in the inning, with closer Kaleb Applebey finally finishing the frame with a strikeout as the tying run was at the plate. Applebey went on to strike out three of the five batters he faced as one of only two pitchers on the night that did not allow a hit. Justin Guiliano did likewise for the Boilers in the top of the eighth. The teams combined to use a dozen pitchers.

The Govs scored at least three runs in four different innings, headlined by a five-run top of the seventh that gave the visitors their 13-2 advantage. Cole Johnson's two-out, two-run double was the big hit of the rally.

Purdue has surrendered at least eight unanswered runs in four consecutive games, conceding 47 total runs since Friday.

The Boilermakers are back in action Friday when they open a three-game Big Ten Conference series at Illinois. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. ET.
