Boilers Add Transfer Nya Smith

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The top freshman from the Southern Conference is heading to West Lafayette, as Purdue women's basketball head coach Katie Gearlds announced the signing of transfer Nya Smith.

Smith played her freshman season at UNC Greensboro where she was tabbed the Freshman of the Year, First Team All-SoCon and the league's first Sixth Woman of the Year recipient.

The Roswell, Ga., native averaged 10.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.0 assists over 32 games with four starts to lead the Spartans to the SoCon regular season and tournament titles and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998.

Smith finished in double figures 21 times during her rookie campaign with a pair of 20-point performances. Smith shot 36.2% from the field and knocked down 53 3-pointers at a 32.7% rate.

Smith was one of eight freshmen nationally last year to average better than 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists, while knocking down 50 or more triples.

Prior to her time at UNCG, Smith guided Milton High School to a 26-3 record, reaching the quarterfinals of the 7A Georgia State Tournament, as a senior with 25.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game.
