HAVRE DE GRACE, Md. – Momo Sugiyama carded an even-par 72 to lead Purdue Women's Golf on the opening day of the Big Ten Championships at Bulle Rock Golf Course. As a team, the Boilermakers sit in 11th place at 12-over with two rounds left to play.
No. 5 Oregon and Illinois hold the clubhouse lead at 2-under, the only teams to finish the first round under par. Wind gusts picked up throughout the day on Friday, leading to some firm and fast greens. The Boilermakers struggled finding the right pace on the greens, as several 3-putts prevented them from claiming a spot in the upper portion of the leaderboard.
Sugiyama made four birdies to go along with four bogeys and 10 pars to complete her level round. The senior Boilermaker began her day with a birdie at the first, rolling in a 12-footer. While she gave the stroke back at the par-5 second, another birdie on No. 9 allowed Sugiyama to make the turn in red figures. Following a bogey to start the back side, the Australian dropped a bomb on the par-3 12th for her third birdie of the day. Two holes later, she drove the green at the short, par-4 14th. A 2-putt birdie pushed her to 2-under before a pair of bogeys dropped her back to even. With Purdue's best score in the opening round, Sugiyama is tied for 11th on the individual leaderboard.
Making her B1G Championships debut, freshman Lauren Timpf carded a 75 (+3) to follow behind Sugiyama. She matched her teammate with a team-high four birdies, all over the final 13 holes to help her play that stretch even par to complete her round. Timpf ended the front side with a birdie before starting the back nine with another birdie. The Macomb, Michigan, native made back-to-back birdies again at the 13th and 14th. Three straight bogeys to end her round prevented the freshman from joining Sugiyama at even par.
Jocelyn Bruch and Samantha Brown contributed to the team's score with rounds of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5), respectively. Bruch started off hot with an opening-hole birdie, and she remained 1-under through the first seven holes before a bogey streak halted the senior's momentum. Brown, another freshman making her conference tournament debut, made 13 pars and five bogeys on Friday. She steadied the ship by parring the final six holes, battling tough as the wind picked up down the stretch.
Purdue has 36 holes left to move up the leaderboard, starting with the second round on Saturday. The Boilermakers will be paired with Michigan (+10) and Maryland (+14), teeing off the 10th hole beginning at 10:10 a.m. ET.
