WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball begins the second half of its Big Ten schedule with consecutive road weekends, beginning with the final long trip of the regular season for a series at Penn State.

First pitch at Medlar Field in Central Pennsylvania is slated for 5:30 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The teams did not face each other last season and are playing their first series against each other on PSU's campus since April 2022, also as part of Easter Weekend.

Purdue will get its first look at Penn State under the guidance of second-year head coach Mike Gambino, who was hired away from Boston College in the summer of 2023. The Nittany Lions finished strong last season, qualifying for the Big Ten Tournament for just the second time since 2013 and becoming only the second No. 8 seed to reach the tournament championship game.

This year, Penn State has Big Ten series wins vs. Indiana, at Northwestern and at Minnesota. While the Lions have not been swept over their first six league weekends, they have dropped two of three in their last two home series – vs. Michigan State and USC. They made up for it with a sweep at Minnesota the first weekend of April, scoring four in the ninth to steal game 2 of the series.

Victories have been tougher to come by for both teams since mid-March. After winning midweek games on March 18, Penn State was 15-4 and Purdue was 18-2. In the month since, the Lions have gone 7-9 and the Boilermakers 5-11.

Purdue leadoff man Albert Choi (Downingtown, suburb of Philadelphia) returns to his home state this weekend. He's second in the Big Ten with 16 stolen bases and has 98 for his collegiate career, which began in 2020 at NJIT. Pitching coach Josh Newman also returns to Penn State, where he spent six seasons as PSU's pitching coach from 2018-23.

The Boilermakers are playing consecutive road weekends in Big Ten play for the 11th time since 2010. The 2011, 2018 and 2024 teams also went 4-2 during those stretches and went on to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. Visits to Penn State were also featured on the front end of the road weekend pairings in both 2011 and 2018. The 2011 season was similar to this year, with trips to Penn State (April 15-17) and Northwestern (April 23-24). Purdue won two of three in both series thanks to a pair of rubber game victories.

After returning home at the end of this weekend, Purdue's schedule turns travel friendly over the final 16 games of the regular season. The Boilermakers play nine of those games at home and the remaining road trips are all short bus rides – Illinois (April 25-27), Indiana (May 9-11) and Ball State (May 13). Northwestern (May 2-4) and Nebraska (May 15-17) come to Alexander Field for Big Ten series in May.
