Ramos to Join Wrestling Staff as Assistant Coach

Matt Ramos' Career Accolades Opens in a new window
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue Wrestling head coach Tony Ersland announced on Monday his intention to hire Matt Ramos as a full-time assistant coach for the Boilermakers.

The redshirt senior is set to join the staff after graduating from Purdue in May with a degree in Selling & Sales Management.

Ramos, fresh off one of the most decorated careers in program history, closed his student-athlete tenure with a 31-3 senior season. He became Purdue's 12th multiple-time All-American and tied the school record with 14 career wins at the NCAA Championships.

"Matt Ramos will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff," Ersland said. "He brings a recent pedigree of success as a Boilermaker that will translate well to a new generation of talent. Especially over the past season, he was already imparting knowledge to his teammates as one of the clear-cut leaders in our room. Young wrestlers should be excited for the opportunity to learn from one of the sport's best in recent years."

Ramos finished his collegiate career with a 115-26 record, good for the third-best win percentage in school history (.816). Hailing from Lockport, Illinois, he has made Purdue his home since 2021 and remained loyal in an era defined by the transfer portal.

"Purdue has been an extension of my family ever since I came here four years ago," Ramos said. "This coaching staff has poured a lot into me and my development, so it's a great honor to join them and help inspire the next era of Boilermakers. This will also allow me to keep training in a familiar environment with the goal of competing on the world stage at the 2028 Summer Olympics."

Ramos ended his career as a four-time NWCA Scholar All-American and three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. In March, he competed in his fourth and final NCAA tournament and came away with a fourth-place All-American finish.

He is Purdue's first two-time All-American since Ben Wissel in 2005-06.

"It's bittersweet to be done as a student-athlete, but I'm excited for the next step in my journey and I can't think of a better place to continue my wrestling career," Ramos said. "I love this sport, and I love Purdue. I'm excited to get to work with our guys and help lead them to championships of their own."

Ramos will continue to elevate the Purdue wrestling program in practice, on road trips and at home duals in Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers just posted their best mark at the NCAA Championships since 1992, finishing 13th out of 66 with 34.5 team points.

Aside from Ramos, Purdue is expected to return every starting wrestler from the 2024-25 season. With two more years of eligibility, Joey Blaze headlines a talented squad after becoming Purdue's youngest NCAA finalist since 1950.

"We have a lot of momentum as a team and we're going to make sure it keeps on growing the right way," Ersland said. "We had a program record 15 Academic All-Big Ten honorees this past season. It's important to build a culture founded on grit and academic excellence. Matt embodies both of those things, and I'm proud to keep him here at Purdue as a coach."

In 2025-26, Ersland will be coaching his 12th season at Purdue along with head assistant coach Leroy Vega (seventh), assistant coach Jake Sueflohn (10th) and Ramos (first).
