WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Despite a hard-fought battle across every court and the first-ever ranked win by sophomore Henrik Villanger, the No. 52 Purdue men's tennis team (10-9, 2-8 Big Ten) fell to No. 40 Washington (14-6, 6-4 Big Ten), 2-4.
Villanger, who played at the No. 2 singles position, improves to 2-0 this season at the spot after a thrilling come-from-behind effort against the No. 120-ranked Dzianis Zharyn: 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. With his second consecutive singles win, Villanger improves to 11-5 record in 2025 (3-4 Big Ten).
Meanwhile, Juan David Velasquez, playing at the No. 1 spot for the fifth time this season, took on the No. 37-ranked Cesar Bouchelaghem, winning the first set in 7-6 (5) tiebreak fashion. The sophomore took the 5-3 lead in the second frame before Bouchelaghem came back to cut off the win in a tiebreaker to push the match to a third set behind a 6-7 (2) effort. Velasquez fell 4-6 in the final set.
The Boilermakers will host their last match of the regular season on Sunday vs. Oregon. The 10 a.m. ET dual will begin with a senior ceremony for the team's lone senior, Daniel Labrador and is planned to take place outside, as long as weather holds for 50 degrees for first serve and winds remain below 20 mph.
