WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football took spring practice back outside of the Kozuch Football Performance Complex to conclude week one on Saturday.
Defensive coordinator Mike Scherer met with the media after Saturday's practice concluded and took a pair of linebackers with him, Winston Berglund and Mani Powell.
During Scherer's first in-person address with the media at Purdue, he hinted at an aggressive style of play from the Boilermakers' defense.
"We like to play offense on defense.," said Scherer. "We're going to come after you but in ways the guys can play fast, run to the football and everyone's eyes are on the football."
Powell is a senior transfer who played under Scherer at both UNLV and Arkansas. He finished top five at UNLV last season in tackles (59), tackles-for-loss (9.0) and sacks (3.5). Powell reiterated Scherer's message about an aggressive style of defense.
"We're going to be aggressive, fast and they're going to see us communicate a lot," said Powell. "They're going to see our best effort every play. We're going to work together, and we're going to make a show for everybody that's watching."
After appearing in just three games last season due to injury, Berglund is excited with the new style of defense under Scherer as he heads into his redshirt sophomore season.
"It's definitely a different style of teaching, and I really like it," said Berglund. "He's a great teacher as well as coach Neal Renna and the rest of the staff. He brings a whole new aspect of how to learn defense, and I really like it."
While the Boilermakers look to play an aggressive style, Scherer said the defense will also let the hard work lead into the team having fun.
"We saw everyone running around [after an interception], and I encourage that because we don't have enough fun when we win," said Scherer. "We're going to have fun, but that doesn't come without the work … It's a mix of the fun stuff with the work and understanding if we work hard, that's what makes the fun happen."
Purdue returns to the practice field for week two of spring ball on Tuesday morning.
