TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Aaron Manias collected six of his eight RBI as Purdue Baseball scored four times in each of the first two innings, another fast start that propelled the Boilermakers to a 14-4 victory at Indiana State in Tuesday's midweek opener.
Purdue (12-1) won by the same score in eight innings for the second game in a row, scoring eight times in the first inning Sunday. The Boilermakers have scored at least nine runs in nine of their last 11 games.
Purdue ended an eight-game losing streak to Indiana State that dated back to 2018. However, Tuesday was the Boilers' fourth victory in Terre Haute since 2015.
Manias erupted at the plate for a 4-for-5 day in which he connected for four extra-base hits and posted the most RBI by a Boilermaker since 2006 – becoming the fifth Purdue player with at least eight RBI in a game. He joined Logan Sutter as Boilermakers with three-double and 10-total base games this season. The 2016 season marked the last time Purdue had two different players with a three-double game. Daniel Underwood had a pair of 10-total base games in 2003 but there have been no previous instances of two different Boilers accomplishing the feat in the same year since the start of the 2001 campaign.
Manias hit a three-run double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the top of the second as the Boilermakers raced out to leads of 4-0 and 8-1. In his third at-bat, Manias doubled in front of Keenan Spence's home run to left field that extended the lead to 10-1. Both players connected for their second home runs of the season.
Another two-run double from Manias in the eighth inning capped his monster day and helped bring the 10-run rule into effect after Isaac Milburn struck out a pair in a hitless bottom half of the frame.
Brayden Olson surrendered just two hits over 4 1/3 innings, giving Purdue four more outs than the original plan with his allotted 75 pitches. Highlighted by a 1-2-3 fourth inning, he retired 10 of 11 batters during his most best stretch, posting three consecutive zeros in the process after the Boilermakers had gone up 8-1.
STREAKS EXTENDED
• Logan Sutter – 15-game on-base (since May 21, 2024), on-base safely multiple times in all 13 games
• Ty Gill – 14-game on-base (since May 17, 2024)
• Albert Choi – 13-game on-base (as a Boilermaker)
• Brandon Anderson – 12-game on-base, 11-game hit, 11-game run scored
• Avery Moore – 10-game on-base
As Purdue's 2-3-4 portion of the lineup, Lukas Cook, Brandon Anderson and Logan Sutter helped set the stage for Manias' elite run production. They were a combined 4-for-11 with three walks, a hit by pitch and seven runs scored. Cook singled in each of his first two at-bats, driving in the first run of the second inning.
Avery Moore and Houston Russell also delivered two-out RBI singles on the day for Purdue.
Manias' home run and final RBI double both went to the opposite field. Since hitting the first of the Boilermakers' three consecutive home runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader vs. Akron, he's 7-for-9 with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI.
Tuesday, Purdue hit multiple home runs in a game for the sixth time this season.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they open Big Ten play at Minnesota. The series will be played inside U.S. Bank Stadium. It will mark the fourth different stadium in Minneapolis since 2009 to serve as the site of a Purdue-Minnesota series.
