WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball's third and final weekend of the season-long homestand features the first series against one of the Big Ten's new West Coast contingent, with No. 24 UCLA making its Alexander Field debut as the Boilermakers' first opponent from the Pacific Time Zone – in any locale – since 2017.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET on Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. With thunderstorms in the forecast for Sunday coupled with a potential travel curfew for UCLA's flight home, a third straight weekend with a doubleheader at Alexander Field is a real possibility.
The Boilermakers (20-4) and Bruins (19-5) feature the best two overall records in the Big Ten.
Purdue plays conference newcomers UCLA and Washington over the next two weekends as the brave new world of the coast-to-coast Big Ten Conference really comes into focus. The Boilermakers host Oregon and travel to USC next season.
Purdue has not played a West Coast team since the 2017 spring break trip featured consecutive four-games series at Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara. CSUN (May 2016) remains the only team based in the Pacific Time Zone to ever play at Alexander Field.
Over the next month, six of Purdue's 11 home games will be against teams making their debuts at Alexander.
FIRST TIME VISITORS TO ALEXANDER FIELD THIS SEASON
• UCLA – March 28-30
• Arizona State – April 14
• Austin Peay – April 22
• Notre Dame – April 29
UCLA won five of six in Big Ten play over the last two weekends while hosting Nebraska and Indiana. The Bruins also won two of three at Maryland to open league play. That has them in a three-way tie with Oregon and Iowa atop the Big Ten standings entering weekend No. 4 of conference play. UCLA also has non-conference wins against Michigan State, USC and Michigan this year. At 19-4, the Bruins are off to their best start since 2019.
UCLA is making its first trip to the Midwest since being the No. 2 seed at an NCAA Regional hosted by Minnesota in June 2018. In the years since, the Bruins have played regular-season series at Georgia Tech (2019) and Vanderbilt (2023) as well as NCAA Regionals at Texas Tech (2021) and Auburn (2022). They also played at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's tournament for weekend No. 2 of this season.
Entering the weekend, there are 10 regulars around the Big Ten with on-base percentages of at least .500. Three of them will be on the field at Alexander. Logan Sutter (.432/.550./.827, 18 XBH, 38 RBI) and Brandon Anderson (.380/.541/.684, 12 XBH, 26 RBI) have powered Purdue's lineup as the 3-4 combination. UCLA's Roch Cholowsky (.333/.518/.691, 14 XBH, 27 RBI) is regarded as one of the top shortstops in the country.
Anderson has homered in the first inning in three of Purdue's last seven games and Sutter has become just the second Boilermaker since 2001 to go deep in six consecutive weekends. Cholowsky is in the class of Michigan second baseman Mitch Voit, who Purdue intentionally walked three times last weekend, among the premier middle infielders in the conference.
The last Purdue-UCLA series (May 2012) ended in memorable fashion, with the Boilermakers scoring 10 times in the top of the ninth to rally for a 15-11 victory in the finale of a spotlight series between two teams that went on to win conference titles and host NCAA Regionals. Purdue captured the Big Ten title the following Saturday. The Bruins went to the College World Series that season and won the national title the following year.
