WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The middle weekend of Purdue Baseball's three straight at Alexander Field during the season-long homestand includes a visit from Michigan as the Boilermakers begin a stretch of nine consecutive weekends featuring a Big Ten series.
First pitch is set for a Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. With rain in the forecast for Sunday, a doubleheader Saturday could become a necessity. Friday at 3:30 p.m. Update: the Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. is now confirmed.
The Boilermakers are 4-0 during their 12-game homestand and sport the Big Ten's best overall record at 18-2. The last two Big Ten Players of the Week will be on the field this weekend. Aaron Manias won the award for Purdue on March 10 after a 13-RBI eruption. Michigan's Mitch Voit was this week's honoree after a 12-RBI outburst.
The Wolverines have been streaky over the first five weeks of their campaign – opening the season 4-0 with a strong showing at a tournament in Puerto Rico, dropping five of their next seven during a tough part of the schedule, rebounding by winning four of five (including a series win vs. Illinois), and most recently dropping three of four at home over the last week (including a shutout at the hands of Western Michigan on Tuesday).
The Michigan-Illinois series was moved from Champaign to Holman Stadium at Major League Baseball's Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla. The Wolverines flew across the country from Southern California to Florida's Atlantic Coast for the series and promptly won the first two games. But the mid-March weather in Ann Arbor didn't slow down USC last weekend as the Trojans rebounded from a sweep at the hands of nationally ranked Oregon by winning two of three at U-M's Ray Fisher Stadium.
For the second year in a row, Michigan is opting to reveal its starting pitcher on the eve of each game. The Wolverines have used exclusively righthanders as their starters over the first two weekends of Big Ten play. Last weekend vs. USC, Kurt Barr was the first man out of the bullpen Friday and then started Sunday's win. In last year's Purdue-Michigan series in Ann Arbor, U-M's game 2 starter was also the first man out of the bullpen in the rubber game. The Boilermakers faced Dylan Vigue and Barr last season.
MICHIGAN'S STARTING PITCHERS THE LAST TWO WEEKENDS
• March 7-9 vs Illinois: Gavin DeVooght (So, RHP) as an opener, Dylan Vigue (So, RHP), David Lally Jr. (Jr, RHP)
• March 14-16 vs USC: Lally Jr., Vigue, Kurt Barr (Jr, RHP)
Kentland, Ind., native Tracy Smith is in his third season as the head coach at Michigan. Purdue previously played Smith's teams when he was the skipper at Miami University (1997-05), Indiana (2006-14), and Arizona State (2015-21). This weekend will mark the first time since May 2011 that Smith has brought his team to West Lafayette, making it his first appearance at Alexander Field (debuted in 2013). The Wolverines' last appearance at Alexander was in May 2022.
