COLUMBUS, Ohio – Purdue Divers accounted for a 1-2-3 finish in women's 3-meter and seniors Sophie McAfee and Jordan Rzepka officially became four-year NCAA Championships qualifiers, highlighting Monday's opening day of the Zone C Diving Championships for the Boilermakers.
In all, six Purdue student-athletes earned their NCAAs bids in Monday's springboards events. Daryn Wright, Avery Worobel and McAfee teamed up for the 1-2-3 finish on 3-meter. Jordan Rzepka (third), Zach Welsh (fifth) and Max Miller (ninth) were all top 10 in the men's 1-meter event. All six only need to be top 12 in their remaining events this week to add to their programs at NCAAs.
After advancing as the 16th-place finisher in the prelim, Jenna Sonnenberg rallied for an 11th-place showing on 3-meter. Should she auto-qualify for NCAAs on 1-meter or platform this week, she'll also be able to compete on 3-meter at the national championship meet.
McAfee and Rzepka officially joined Purdue's elite group of four-year NCAAs qualifiers, a list that also includes Casey Matthews (2009-10, 2013-14), Joe Cifelli (2016-19), Brandon Loschiavo (2017-19, 2021), Greg Duncan (2019-22), Maggie Merriman (2019, 2021-23) and Maycey Vieta (2021-24). As a junior, Wright is now three-quarters of the way to joining the group as well.
As freshmen, Welsh and Worobel both qualified for NCAAs in their debuts as Zones. Miller is headed back as a sophomore after scoring on 1-meter at the national championship meet a year ago.
Worobel, McAfee, Sonnenberg and Rzepka all improved on their prelim list totals in the final. Wright won the prelim by 11.8 points.
The genders switch springboards for Tuesday's action, with freshmen Kaden Springfield and Tyler Wills making their debuts at Zones.
