COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first Big Ten road test and match against a top-25 opponent, the Purdue women's tennis team suffered a 0-4 loss at No. 8 Ohio State.
With the result, the Boilermakers' five-match winning streak came to an end as the team falls to 7-2 (1-1 Big Ten) while Ohio State improves to 7-1 (1-0 Big Ten).
Purdue, ranked No. 67 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking, were swept in doubles behind a trio of 6-4 scores.
Meanwhile, Purdue took on four nationally-ranked singles players ranking from No. 89 to No. 9 in the nation. The Boilermakers' own No. 120 Ece Gencer fell 6-3, 6-1 to No. 79 Audrey Spencer at the No. 5 position for Ohio State's second point of the dual. Purdue's No. 2 singles player Fatima Gutierrez fought hard against No. 9 Luciana Perry, but fell 6-3, 6-2 for Ohio State's 3-0 lead. The match was sealed with Ohio State's No. 47 Teah Chavez defeating Carmen Gallardo Guevara, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Purdue will return to action next Sunday, March 9 at Penn State (8-0, 0-0 Big Ten). The showdown is set for 10 a.m. ET.
