HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. CJ Richmond hit two long home runs to right field in the middle innings to help jump start the lineup and five pitchers teamed up for 16 strikeouts as Purdue Baseball defeated Niagara 11-1 Sunday to complete a four-game series sweep.

The Boilermakers (8-0) swept a four-game set for the second weekend in a row to remain unbeaten, keeping pace with the 2022 team's 15-0 start. Both teams enjoyed a four-game sweep at Ting Stadium during the season's second weekend. Purdue is now 19-4 in Holly Springs since 2022 and returns to Ting Stadium next weekend for a four-game set vs. Akron.

Joe Trennery and Brayden Olson were both very effective over 3 1/3 innings, teaming up for 12 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball. Niagara's only run of the day scored on a walk-off play with runners on the corners and two outs in the fourth inning. Purdue failed to execute the back pick on the runner at third base and the ball rolled into no man's land.

The 16 strikeouts Sunday were one shy of Purdue's total in game 3 of the series, matching the fifth most in program history. The Boilermakers' 33 Ks in the final two games of the series is a team record over consecutive games. The 55 strikeouts and 13.8 strikeouts per nine innings in the series were also the team's most in a four-game series (for data available going back to 2001).

Meanwhile, Purdue conceded just nine runs (six earned) on 24 hits over 36 innings in the series. Pitching coach Josh Newman's staff did it while not having any Boilermaker make more than one appearance for the weekend. Purdue's 6.0 hits per nine innings mark for the series was the team's best in a four-game weekend since a three-team pod weekend in Champaign (vs. ILL & MSU) in April 2021 and seventh best overall since 2001. The nine runs allowed were the fewest in a four-game series since May 2016 vs. Cal State Northridge (six).

Richmond joined Logan Sutter as Boilermakers with a multi-homer game in the series. He hit his first two long balls in a Purdue uniform Sunday, becoming the first Boilermaker to hit his first home run as part of a multi-homer game since Alec Olund in April 2015.

Purdue trailed 1-0 when Richmond hit a 380-foot home run off the back wall of the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth. Two innings later, his 402-foot blast – which landed on the elevated road on the hill above the same bullpen – ignited a seven-run inning that blew the game open.

Eli Anderson's RBI triple was the other notable extra-base hit of the big inning. The Boilermakers posted five-, seven- and eight-run frames in the series – all in a different game. Dating back to the Feb. 16 series finale vs. Stephen F. Austin, Purdue has scored 58 runs in its last five games – its most over a five-game stretch played away from home since a 66-run outburst in March 2023.

Trennery became Purdue's first true freshman to start a weekend game on the mound since Troy Wansing in 2022. Trenerry went nine-up, nine-down through the first three innings, highlighted by striking out the side on 14 pitches in the top of the first. Olson struck out seven of the 13 batters he faced, including NU's 2-3-4-5 hitters in consecutive fashion for the final two outs of the sixth inning and first two outs of the seventh. He struck out the side in the top of the sixth overall.

Bradon Anderson hit safely and scored a run in all four games of the series. He's now riding a streak of six consecutive multi-hit games.

For the second year in a row, the Boilermakers won a four-game series in Holly Springs vs. an NCAA Regional qualifier from the previous season. While four-game series are not as common as three-game sets, the sweep of Niagara also marked the first time since at least 2005 that Purdue swept a four-game series vs. a non-conference opponent that went to Regional the previous year.

Friday's series opener vs. Akron is slated for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch.
