WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A dozen event victories and nine season or career bests that went into the program record books headlined Purdue Swimming & Diving's first home meet of the new semester as the Boilermakers hosted Kentucky and the Notre Dame women Friday at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
The Purdue women swept the triple dual with the Wildcats and Fighting Irish to improve to 4-0 in duals this season and 12-2 dating back to the start of the 2023-24 campaign. The women won eight events Friday, including the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle. The Boilermakers enjoyed a pair of thrilling relay victories. The women opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay and the men closed the day with a victory in the 400 free relay.
After winning three gold medals at the U.S. Open Championships last month, Brady Samuels posted four NCAA provisional qualifying times (B Cuts) while winning the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle. He also posted B Cuts on the leadoff legs of both relays (100 back, 100 free). The senior won the 200 free in 1:33.74, breaking 1:34 in the 200 free for the first time while improving on his second-fastest time in program history. Samuels leads the team with 12 individual event victories this season.
Abby Marcukaitis (100 back) and Campbell Scofield (200 fly) were victorious in the same events they won at the Purdue Invitational in November, the Boilermakers' last home meet. They once again posted lifetime bests to climb the program's all-time leaderboards. Marcukaitis (52.82) broke 53 seconds in the 100 back for the first time, pulling within a tenth of a second of the team record while improving on her third-fastest time in Purdue history. Scofield (1:58.07) dropped nearly half a second off her time from November, climbing into fifth place on the team's all-time list.
Hannah Hill (50 free) and Daryn Wright (3-meter) also won events Friday to match Marcukaitis with a team-high six individual event victories this season. Led by event winners Avery Worobel (1-meter) and Wright, the Purdue women had at least the top three finishers on both springboards. Wright moved into seventh place in team history on 3-meter with a lifetime best list score of 373.43. She now ranks top seven in team history in all three diving events.
Lara Phipps, Marcukaitis and Samuels all won an individual event and contributed to a relay winner. Phipps moved into 13th place in team history while winning the 100 free with her season-best time of 49.80. Adele Sands (500 free) joined Phipps, Scofield and Worobel as freshmen to win events for Purdue on Friday. Sands and Reagan Mattice teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the 500 free.
Kate Mouser moved into 11th place in program history while finishing as the runner-up in the 200 free and also posted a B Cut in the 400 IM.
Andy Kelly anchored Purdue's 400 free relay team to victory. His 100 split of 43.59 was third best among the entire race. Samuels had put the Boilermakers ahead early with a leadoff split of 42.46, easily the best in the event.
Jordan Rzepka won on 3-meter with a 400-point for his eighth event victory of the season. Kentucky's Samuel Duncan, the brother of Purdue alum and Olympian Greg Duncan, bested Rzepka on 1-meter to deny the senior another springboard sweep.
Freshman Evan Mackesy continued to impress during his debut season, moving into sixth place in program history in the 1000 free (9:11.92) while enjoying a time drop of 6.39 seconds from the last time he competed in the event.
The Purdue women compete again Saturday when they travel to Champaign for a 4 p.m. ET dual at Illinois. The next home meet is the annual co-ed rivalry dual vs. Indiana, set for Jan. 24-25. Platform diving is Friday at 5:30 and the remainder of the dual will be contested Saturday at 10 a.m. The annual Senior Day ceremony is slated for Jan. 25 at 9:30 a.m.
